Spring arrives, bringing fresh breezes across the entire country, an important moment for every business to reflect on the journey traveled and to add momentum to step into the new year. For Gemadept, 2025 is a special year as the company celebrates its 35th year, vibrant and full of life , contributing vivid colors to the picture of Vietnam’s economy from the early days of the Doi Moi period
The first springs
Gemadept’s journey is built upon the will, determination, and relentless aspiration of a pioneering Vietnamese enterprise that opened sea routes, connecting Vietnamese goods to international markets.
Starting in 1990, without land, assets, or capital, Gemadept now owns and operates a port and logistics ecosystem spanning from the North to the South, in strategic and key economic regions
The sound bearing the name of seaports and ICDs
Gemadept’s first transformation was in 1993, when the Company was one of the first three enterprises selected by the State for a pilot equitization.
Just two years later, Gemadept pioneered the introduction of the inland port model to Vietnam with the establishment of ICD Phuoc Long (1995).
To date, this model continues to be successful and has been replicated throughout the country. Originating from Gemadept, Vietnam now has the ICD inland port type enshrined in the Maritime Code.
Venturing into the Central region, Gemadept laid the first foundations in the seaport sector with Gemadept Dung Quat International Port, creating momentum for the Company to reach the strategic trade gateway in Hai Phong, with the focus being the largest-scale Nam Dinh Vu Port Cluster in the North, strongly supported by Nam Hai ICD
In particular, Gemadept is proud to be the pioneering Vietnamese maritime enterprise entrusted by the Government to implement the Ha Nam Channel Upgrade Project.
This nationally significant project has contributed to clearing waterways, changing port operating practices, and balancing draft between the two largest port areas in the country, increasing vessel carrying capacity, reducing logistics time and costs, and enhancing the outstanding advantages of the regional port cluster in general and Nam Dinh Vu Port in particular.
In the South, from ICD Phuoc Long and Binh Duong Port, Gemadept continues to pioneer the investment and development of the Gemalink Deep-sea Port – ranked among the world’s top 19 ports with the capacity to receive the largest vessels up to 250,000 DWT.
Gemalink is not only a source of pride for Gemadept and the nation’s maritime industry but also a symbol of national spirit and pride in the process of global economic integration
Resounding harmony with the logistics service chain
Leveraging the strengths of the port system, Gemadept pioneered the development of logistics services, leading the list of 10 most prestigious logistics companies in the country for many years.
From a pure agency service in 1990, Gemadept has continuously expanded and diversified its services, bringing comprehensive logistics solutions to customers. Gemadept’s logistics development strategy is clearly demonstrated through its strong imprints from inland ports, cross-border transportation, warehousing, to container repair and inspection…
In particular, since 2010, Gemadept has intensified its investment in logistics across six sectors: distribution centers, air cargo terminal, project cargo transportation, sea and river transportation, cold chain logistics, and automotive logistics, becoming a trusted partner of leading domestic and international corporations
The green melodies
Gemadept’s development journey is closely linked to steady progress in the capital market. From the equitization milestone in 1993 to the milestone of listing shares on the stock market in 2002, Gemadept has entered the transparent capital market, affirming the position and prestige of Vietnamese enterprises in the eyes of investors.
Over more than 3 decades, Gemadept has recorded impressive achievements, joining the billion-dollar enterprise club – a testament to sustainable growth in asset size and capitalization.
This remarkable development is the result of effective business strategy, transparent and dedicated management of the Company’s Board of Directors, the efforts of the staff, the companionship of shareholders, investors and the support of agencies and departments.
Gemadept’s 35-year journey can be compared to a journey of tempering and maturing through the hardships and challenges of a person. This has continued to motivate and inspire the Vietnamese business community and make important contributions to the country’s socio-economic development.
Proudly carrying on
Stepping into its 35th year, youthful, dynamic, and brimming with vitality, Gemadept continues its pioneering footsteps, leading the market with the development of the Nam Dinh Vu phase 3, Gemalink Deep-sea Port phase 2, and further investing in expanding its satellite network to enrich and deepen its port and logistics ecosystem.
In the future, with nationally significant projects and solid movements in the greening and digitalization process, Gemadept aspires to continue writing its soaring melodies, harmonizing with the symphony of Vietnam’s maritime industry.
In the northern gateway region, the Nam Dinh Vu Port Phase 3 is under rapid construction, expected to be completed by the end of 2025, raising the total capacity of the port complex to 2 million TEUs.
The project possesses many outstanding advantages, capable of accommodating 7 feeder ships simultaneously upon completion, combined with the benefits from the upgraded Ha Nam Channel, allowing fully loaded 48,000 DWT vessels to dock.
The Nam Dinh Vu Port Cluster continues to meet the increasing intra-Asia shipping demand, enhancing Gemadept’s position in the northern market and affirming the role of the Hai Phong gateway port area.
In the South, since its operation, Phase 1 of Gemalink Port has exceeded its designed capacity, setting new records in handling productivity in the history of Vietnam’s port operations, contributing to enhancing the competitiveness of the Cai Mep port cluster, creating momentum for the implementation of Gemalink Phase 2 in the near future.
Summarizing 2024, the Cai Mep port cluster continues to affirm its position as its ranking is elevated to the Top 7 globally in operating efficiency (according to the World Bank), aiming to become an important transshipment hub in Asia.
With the determination to further integrate Vietnam into the global value chain, in the coming period, Gemadept continues to seek opportunities to realize its investment and expansion goals, enriching and deepening its port and logistics ecosystem through potential projects: ICDs, river ports, deep-sea ports, logistics centers, air cargo terminal, …; developing service chains in both breadth and depth; strengthening cooperation and joint development; improving operational efficiency; caring for the lives of employees; and focusing on social responsibility, greening, and digitalization.
The era of dynamic, efficient and sustainable development
The new spring is arriving across the country, bringing hope for a peaceful and prosperous new year.
Sharing in the joyful atmosphere, Gemadept, with steadfast will and firm belief, continues to strive its utmost to bring outstanding value to customers, partners, and shareholders, contribute to the community and society, and accompany the country on its development path.
Continuing to build a foundation of sustainable, transparent, and efficient corporate governance, Gemadept always respects the interests of stakeholders, affirming that sustainable governance is a competitive advantage and proudly continues to be the only port and logistics enterprise honored in the VNCG50 list – Top 50 listed companies with the best corporate governance in Vietnam in 2024.
Gemadept always bears in mind that the Company’s mission is closely linked to the country’s development. Joining hands in the nation’s common goals, Gemadept wishes to contribute to building a strong Vietnam. On that journey, Gemadept commits to always accompany the country, conquering new development goals.
